Hi, I’m Sarah Michelle Brown. Ready when you are, let’s dive in!
I’m a writer and director who tells women’s stories, the kind that take you by the heart, rough you up a little, and then hand you back to yourself better than they found you. That’s the job, as far as I’m concerned. Not just to move you, but to leave you a little more inspired.
Take First Hand Woman, my stage play. Five characters, each one a stage of loss, Denial, Bargaining, Anger, Depression, Acceptance, in one room, fighting it out. Together, they’re actually telling the story of one woman finding her way back to herself. It played Montreal, Toronto, and New York, earned a New York Times mention along the way, and left more than a few strangers crying and laughing within the same ten minutes. I’m currently adapting it into a feature film screenplay, because apparently five women in one room wasn’t quite enough space for this story.
That’s the kind of thing you’ll find here. Work with heart, a little heat, and women at the center who are wide awake and getting somewhere.
So, have a look around. Read a bit about the work. And while you’re here, watch a short film or two, they’ll tell you more about my voice than any bio could.
Welcome. Really glad you’re here.
Dream up,
Sarah Michelle Brown
